Palestine a Realistic Film, 2014
Multi-channel HD video installation, 23 min
Palestine a Realistic Film takes its title from a 1929 religious propaganda film made by the British Evangelical Missionary Film Committee which set out to film the “Biblical Palestine” and document Christian missionary activities in the region. Appropriating scenes from the only existing copy of the film, the work juxtapose the historical footage with a present- day voyage in undertaken by Palestinian ophthalmologic in Palestine, working St.John’s eye Hospital in Ocupied East Jerusalem.
The work explores the enduring presence of biblical fantasy and the legacies of European colonialism in the Middle East, asking questions regarding the way history is imagined and represented.
