National Park
National Park is a photographic and audio installation developed in collaboration with Alex Strada and commissioned by Socrates Sculpture Park in Long Island City, Queens. The photographs are displayed on a large, curved structure that evokes both a circular amphitheater and a video game simulator, linking two theatrical and immersive environments through which political and ideological narratives are staged. Reduced from their original monumental dimensions, the presidents appear at eye level, decaying yet still symbolically steadfast. This shift in scale unsettles the hierarchy traditionally imposed by monuments and invites an encounter that is both subversive and playful.
The installation pairs its photographic elements with a continuous ambient soundtrack recorded in the Virginia field where the busts remain. Rural Virginia seeps into a New York City park as the two soundscapes intertwine, producing a subtle slippage between the two places. A QR code offers an additional layer: a conversation with the local builder who chose to preserve the busts rather than destroy them.
